Pecherska Lavra is one of the biggest Orthodox monastery with caves in Ukraine and the largest Orthodox shrine throughout the Christian world, second is only the Vatican. 

Since the beginning of 1050 it was a caves for prays of monks. So later it became the center of Orthodox Christians in Eastern Europe. Together with St. Sophia Cathedral it is inscribed to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site. It was named as one of seven Wonders of Ukraine in 2007.

Until the mid-twentieth century, the Lavra Bell Tower was the tallest building in Kiev

Monastery was founded in the 11th century.

Lavra - that honorable title, which was given to a very large and important (male) monasteries.
The name "Pecherska" comes from Russian word "pechera" (means cave), which were found in this area and where the first monks were settled.
Therefore it is also translated as Kiev Cave Monastery.
